A linear motion system (also called linear unit, linear drive unit,
linear module) is a mechanical device that in its
simplest form converts the rotary motion of a lead screw or a belt
and pulley to the
linear movement of a carriage moving back and forth along a profile that has
internal or external guides to support the load on the carriage.
Normally the customer fit a motor and gear of his own choice to the
input shaft. But linear motion systems are also available as
packages where the motor and gear is fitted from factory and a
suitable drive is included in the shipment. Linear motion systems can use
almost any type of electrical motor, from AC, DC, stepper to servomotors, and be
equipped with all kind of options and accessories depending on the
application. More
information on Thomson linear motion systems can be found on the Danaher
Motion website.
